July 16, 2026
Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. (Head Office: 2-6-4 Otemachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President, CEO: Hideya Moridaira) have received approval from the SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative) for the following our Group's net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target.
Background
Furukawa Electric Group aims to realize the Furukawa Electric Group Vision 2030 and achieve sustainable growth through sustainable management centered on the Furukawa Electric Group Purpose “Composing the core of a brighter world.” As part of this effort, the company formulated the “Furukawa Electric Group Environmental Vision 2050” in March 2021, and in November 2024, it declared its aim to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain, thereby contributing to a decarbonized society.
Details
Our Group’s net-zero greenhouse gas emissions targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Following the validation of our near-term SBT1.5°C targets (note 1) for FY2030 in August 2023, we have now received validation for our net-zero and long-term targets for FY2049, as well as near-term targets for FY2035. We will drive initiatives across the entire Group to achieve these targets.
Details of ‘science-based net-zero target’ approved by the SBTi are provided below.
| Net-zero | Achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by FY2049 (note 2) |
|---|---|
| Near-term | Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 63.0% by FY2035 from a FY2021 base year Reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services and use of sold products 38.0% within the same timeframe (note 3) |
| Long-term | Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90.0% by FY2049 from a FY2021 base year Reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90.0% within the same timeframe |
SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative)
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) promotes the setting of emissions reduction targets by companies to help limit the rise in global average temperatures caused by climate change. The SBTi’s Corporate Net-Zero Standard provides the guidance and tools necessary for companies to set science-based targets for achieving net-zero emissions by no later than 2050.
-
note 1SBT1.5℃: Greenhouse gas reduction target that limits the rise in global temperatures below 1.5℃ compared to pre-industrial levels
-
note 2We will proceed with reductions in line with long-term targets and neutralize residual emissions.
-
note 3Scope1: Direct emissions from the use of fuel and industrial processes by the company
Scope2: Indirect emissions from the use of electricity and heat purchased by the company
Scope3: Other indirect emissions from business activities, including the value chain
