July 15, 2026

Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. (Head office: 2-6-4 Otemachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President, CEO: Hideya Moridaira) underwrote a portion of the capital increase funded by external capital and entered into a new share subscription agreement in Starlight Engine Ltd. (Head office: Distribution A Building, AW1-S, Tokyo Ryutsu Center 6-1-1 Heiwajima, Otaku, Tokyo, Japan, President and CEO: Kiyotaka Kikuchi). Through this investment, Furukawa Electric will further strengthen its partnership with Starlight Engine toward the advancement of fusion energy.

Background

Globally, competition to achieve fusion power demonstration, commercialization, and eventual societal deployment is accelerating. In Japan, the demonstration of fusion power in the 2030s has been positioned as a national strategic priority. Policy support is gaining momentum, including initiatives to support technology development by startups and the formulation of public-private investment roadmaps, aimed at transitioning from the research and development (R&D) phase to social implementation and industrialization.
Against this backdrop, Furukawa Electric, together with Starlight Engine, will promote the “FAST (Fusion by Advanced Superconducting Tokamak)” project, an industry-academia initiative aimed at demonstrating fusion power generation and achieving subsequent commercialization and social implementation under private-sector leadership. FAST adopts a tokamak configuration, leveraging decades of accumulated research achievements and experimental data developed by researchers at national laboratories and universities through projects such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and the Japan‒EU joint project “JT-60SA,” as well as Japanʼs strong manufacturing and industrial base. In addition, the design and development of FAST are being driven by some of Japanʼs leading researchers in tokamak systems and plasma science, who have joined the project as key members. Engineering design and preparation for construction are currently progressing steadily.

Details

To further accelerate the advancement of FAST, Furukawa Electric has entered into a share subscription agreement with Starlight Engine Ltd. by participating in a portion of its third-party allotment of new shares, which raised more than JPY 6 billion in external funding.
Through this investment, Furukawa Electric will strengthen its partnership with Starlight Engine Ltd. and contribute to the advancement of fusion energy.
Furukawa Electric and SuperPower Inc. (“SuperPower”), its subsidiary engaged in the development and manufacture of high-temperature superconducting wire, will also further solidify their position as global leaders in the supply of high-temperature superconducting wire for fusion power generation demonstration and future social implementation.

About Furukawa Electric’s Superconductivity Business

Furukawa Electric began research and development in low-temperature superconductivity in 1963 and high-temperature superconductivity in 1986 and has since participated in numerous projects in the field.
Since its establishment in March 2000, SuperPower has been developing and commercializing high-temperature superconductivity technologies for a variety of applications such as energy, medical, transportation, and research sectors where high energy density, high magnetic fields, or environmentally friendly characteristics are highly valued.
