Optical fiber is a medium for transmitting optical signals and in addition to excellent transmission characteristics, also combines the features of thinness and lightness. Optical fiber is composed of 2 kinds of dielectric materials (glass), the part called the “core” that transmits the light, and the concentric part known as “cladding” that covers its circumference. By making the refractive index of the core higher than that of the cladding, the fiber uses the total reflection phenomenon of light to transmit optical signals confined within the core.

Furukawa Electric has optical fiber manufacturing plants in places such as Mie Prefecture in Japan, Georgia in the USA, Goa in India and Sao Paulo in Brazil, and supplies optical fiber throughout the world in timely fashion.
