Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President, CEO: Hideya Morihira; hereinafter “Furukawa Electric”) and Nokia Solutions and Networks Japan G.K. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Takayuki Oshima; hereinafter “Nokia”) have expanded their collaboration in ultra-high-speed broadband technologies initiated in June 2025. By combining Furukawa Electric’s access network and system integration capabilities with Nokia’s AI-driven network management and software platforms, the companies will provide an integrated solution to enhance large-scale and wide-area network operations during FY2026.
Background
In recent years, network traffic has increased dramatically due to the spread of generative AI, cloud services, and high-definition video distribution. In addition, the proliferation of always-connected IoT devices has further increased the demand for highly reliable networks. Under these circumstances, telecommunications operators—particularly those managing large-scale and wide-area networks—must transition to preventive maintenance-oriented operations that enable rapid recovery from failures and proactively prevent them.
At the same time, in-home network environments are becoming increasingly complex due to the rise in Wi-Fi-connected devices, requiring comprehensive optimization. As a result, conventional labor-intensive operations are no longer sufficient, and demand for advanced AI-driven network operations is increasing.
Details
The companies will provide a solution that enhances network operations through AI by integrating Furukawa Electric’s access network technologies with Nokia’s AI and software technologies. Furukawa Electric will deliver end-to-end solutions for large-scale and wide-area networks, leveraging its expertise in network design, construction, and maintenance. Nokia will provide AI-based software and automation technologies, including platforms such as “Altiplano” for access network management and “Corteca” for in-home connectivity optimization. This will eliminate dependence on individual expertise and support telecommunications operators in delivering highly reliable services.
Automation of Network Operations
AI-driven automation reduces reliance on manual operations and ensures stable operational quality even in large-scale and wide-area networks.
Promotion of Preventive Maintenance
AI-based data analysis detects early signs of anomalies, enabling preventive maintenance rather than reactive responses to failures.
Enhanced User Experience
AI analyzes in-home network environments and optimizes Wi-Fi connectivity and communication quality, improving users’ quality of experience.
Faster Fault Recovery
AI provides optimal recovery procedures during failures, enabling rapid restoration.
Future Outlook
Furukawa Electric and Nokia will support telecommunications operators in achieving both operational efficiency and improved quality in large-scale, highly reliable networks. By advancing solutions that combine high-capacity networks with advanced operations, the companies aim to realize highly reliable, autonomous network operations and accelerate the deployment of next-generation networks in Japan.
During fiscal year 2026, an AI-based operational support system will be introduced at Furukawa Electric’s Hiratsuka facility and the solution will be launched. In addition, proof-of-concept trials using actual operator networks will be conducted.
